I’m finally sitting down to post about our consultation with a neonatologist at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. On Friday, September 28th, we saw Dr. Zozobrado to discuss caring for Kassidy after birth. Dr. Z said Kassidy will be the 5th anencephaly baby he has seen in the Valley this year.
The meeting was beneficial, we decided on these details after her birth:
1. We will hold Kassidy immediately after birth.
2. There will be no efforts to revive Kassidy when her heart stops beating/breathing stops.
3. We do not want our baby removed from the OR or postpartum room at any time.
4. Kassidy will not be given any medication.
5. If she lives longer than a few hours, she will be fed formula through a tube (for her comfort).
6. We will baptize her.
7. That we be able to bathe her and dress her.
8. That we keep her bassinet card, any hats/blankets, any photographs, ID bracelet, hand/footprints, lock of hair, etc.
9. That a sign be posted on our door to promote privacy from hospital staff.
10. That our family be able to visit us.
More surprisingly, Dr. Z informed us that 16% of anencephaly babies have omphaloceles!!! Kassidy isn’t the only one! I still hope to find another mother of a baby like Kassidy.
Yesterday, 10/7/12 we made Kassidy a build-a-bear. Every little baby needs a toy…and maybe us having something to hold will make parting with her a little easier…
I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow to look over my blood glucose that I’ve been tracking. I’m really looking forward to good news and being able to stop the finger pricks!
God Bless,
Stevie, Kelsey and Kassidy
