September 21, 2012 - Size of Omphalocele Concerns

Hello Family and Friends,
It’s been a tough week. Monday, at my 27 week appointment, Stevie and I found out that Kassidy DOES have a heart defect. It’s called an Endocardial Cushion Defect. Kassidy has two chambers in her heart as opposed to four. We’re told that her omphalocele (tummy) prevented her heart from developing properly. We learned that heart defects with omphaloceles are VERY common. My doctor offered to send me to another specialist to monitor her heart, but I declined. Nothing will change Kassidy’s outcome, so I thought avoiding the specialist would be easier on me emotionally. We will continue to see Dr. Connors.
I also failed my one hour glucose test that checked my blood sugar (and gestational diabetes). I know it’s common that women would fail the test, but it really got to me. It seems like everything that could possibly go wrong has happened…I felt so discouraged. I went back to the doctor yesterday to do a 3 hours test. The sugar drink they gave me made me so sick, I wasn’t able to keep it down. Now I have to go back on Monday 9-24-12 to attempt my 3 hour test again.
My ultrasound on Monday revealed that Kassidy’s omphalocele is already 8cm across…very large. If I carry her past 32 weeks, I will need a C-Section as she will not fit in the birth canal. Another piece of bad news :( But, this isn’t up to me. It’s God’s plan.
We have two new ultrasound pictures of Kassidy, I will post when I am able to get access to a scanner. One is a 3D picture, and shows one of her arms and her face.
Thanks for prayers and positive thoughts!
Stevie, Kelsey and Kassidy Briana <3
